Program Description:

Nepal is a magical Himalayan country with an unusually diverse landscape. Eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are found in Nepal, making it a haven for trekking, mountain biking, and hiking. The country is also known for its national wildlife parks, jungle safaris, river rafting, and its many beautiful temples and places of worship. Nepal offers visitors a mix of ancient and modern with common sites like cows walking down the streets, Buddhist monks talking on cell phones and local children playing on 1000 year-old temple ruins.

Kathmandu is a captivating place. It is the capital and largest city of Nepal, and offers visitors a mix of the modern life and ancient culture. The city is situated in Kathmandu Valley , along with the cities of Patan and Bhaktapur where our other volunteer programs are located. A visit to Kathmandu is like stepping back into the 12th century. Parts of this bustling city are very crowded and run down, and other areas are architecturally stunning and home to numerous notable Hindi and Buddhist temples, monkeys, and ancient buildings. Kathmandu is the gateway to the Himalayans and attracts hikers and climbers from around the world. There are numerous things to see and do around Kathmandu. Among the highlights are the Three Goddesses Temple, Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Mahakala Temple, Pasupatinath and Bodhnath and shopping and bargaining around the touristy Thamel area.

Child Care / Education Centers In Kathmandu our volunteers support local care centers, street kids centers, and places that provide free day care and kindergarten education. If you want to work with children we have several programs available in this location. Please note that most placements are only part-time, since the children attend school in the mornings and early afternoons, and you will be assigned to multiple placements when needed.

Setting Description:

Medical Internship Medical and Nursing students are welcome at the International Children's Hospital. Applicants must go through a referral (documentation) process and registration + a $200 administrative cost will need to be paid. As a volunteer in this program you will be surrounded by a supportive and friendly group of medical staff committed to bringing quality and accessible health care to the people of Nepal. Its rapid growth ensures a wide variety of possible projects available for the prospective volunteer- everything from observing local doctors to developing your own self initiated project. You will gain first-hand experience of many tropical diseases and common health problems of a developing country. Volunteers will also be posted to the out-patient departments and the casualty rooms where they could see a variety of clinical cases.
