Program Overview

Program Description:
Italian Language Classes Each morning all students will take part in Italian language grammar and conversation classes. No prior Italian language skills are needed, and a placement test will be offered to those with prior studies. Courses are offered at six levels, from beginner to advanced. Students will choose one track from the following for afternoon classes: Music Track -Vocal or instrumental students will receive private or small group music lessons by well-known musicians from Florence’s ensembles twice per week. -Lectures on the history of Italian music offered twice per week. -An excursion to Verona to attend the outdoor summer opera festival in the Roman amphitheater is included. Other concerts in Florence may be attended based on the local schedule. Art Track -Choose an individual or small group studio art class in: watercolor, sketching, figure drawing, ceramics, sculpture, or photography. Students will do much of their work as they absorb the city of Florence, rather than in the classroom. -Participate in lectures on Italian art history twice per week. Among the artists featured are Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. -Attend guided tours of world-famous art museums, including the Uffizi and the Galleria dell’Accademia. Italian Theatre Track -Attend lectures on the history of Italian theatre twice per week, including the Commedia dell’Arte and the masks. -Choose a second elective course from: history of Italian cinema, literature, art history, music history, or social and political history.

No prior Italian language needed.
