- Interns are trained in research related tasks associated with the Photo ID program, sloughed skin & fecal samples for DNA analysis, collection of spatial, water quality and environmental data. Experience is obtained in sample collection techniques; sample storage and management; data.
Internship program is offered during The Oceania Projects vessel-based long-term study of the ecology and behaviour of Humpback whales in Hervey Bay, Australia. Interns join the Expedition for a week or multiple weeks subject to time/budget constraints. Participants work with PhD Candidates.
Interns obtain hands-on experience of fieldwork tasks involved in a long-term scientific study of marine mammals. Participating as a member of a research team develops the communications, people & teamwork skills of Interns. With prior arrangement Students may be able to obtain course credits.
- Setting Description:
- The study area is within the Hervey Bay Marine Park adjacent to Fraser Island. Hervey Bay is located off the southern coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Brisbane. Humpback whales enter and circulate within Hervey Bay during their southern migration. Research is conducted from a 12meter catamaran.
