Program Overview

Program Description:
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies (HNC) is the only graduate program of its kind – a collaborative effort where degrees are jointly awarded by The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University. The HNC offers both a one-year Graduate Certificate in Chinese and American Studies and a two-year Master of Arts in International Studies with a choice of focus in one of four concentrations: International Politics, International Economics, International and Comparative Law, and Chinese Studies. Students participating in the MA program will receive a degree conferred by both The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Nanjing University. The Center is a fully bi-cultural and bi-lingual institution located in Nanjing, China, on the campus of Nanjing University. Non-Chinese students take their classes in Mandarin Chinese while Chinese students take their classes in English, and MA students will write and defend a thesis in their target language at the end of the two-year program. Hopkins-Nanjing Center alumni join a growing global network of over 2,000.

The extraordinary curriculum allows advanced Mandarin speakers to study international politics, international law, and international economics and Chinese and American studies entirely in Mandarin. The intensive in-classroom experience is supplemented by HNC residential community, which includes Chinese students who are studying in the same fields with English as their target language of instruction.

HNC graduates have discovered limitless possibilities after graduating from the Center. Alumni have continued on to successful careers working for governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Employers worldwide recognize the extraordinary abilities of HNC graduates, who are multilingual and multicultural, and this is reflected year after year when students leave the Center.
