Program Overview

Program Description:
The international economic crisis, the impact on member countries and on the strength of the euro are putting a strain even on the recent Lisbon Treaty. It took 10 years for its approval, through the unfortunate experience of the European Constitution. The risk linked with this long process of negotiation is that the Treaty is now born "old", i.e. not suitable to cope with the new challenges that the economic crisis is posing. The loan granted to Greece in extremis to avoid “failure" and the sense of powerlessness against the risk of contagion to other European countries (the so-called PIGS) contribute to emphasize the shortcomings both of the European construction as a whole and of the single currency in particular. It is therefore necessary to investigate the direction that European integration has taken so far, and what direction could (or should) take in the future. This will be the main task of this course, you will also try to dispel two myths about Europe (such as those related to the introduction and operation of the Euro) with a non-partisan approach that will seek to highlight not only the lights but also the shadows of European construction. The course will present various topics mainly in political and economic terms, with teachers who have a long experience of studying and working with the EU institutions. Specifically, it will cover topics such as the principles of the Union, the different institutional scenarios, the distribution of power in Brussels, the division of competences between the Union and the Member States, the innovations introduced by the Lisbon Treaty, the single currency and European policies, the economic crisis and the future of the European Union. Useful to the Diploma course in "European Affairs".
