Program Overview

Program Description:
The objective of the M.Sc. “Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics” (TERMA) is to provide the participants with the appropriate knowledge and skills to analyze current problems related to the use and management of land, water and energy resources at various scales and to develop adequate solutions towards sustainable socio-economic development. To this end, the ITT emphasizes a holistic approach combining technological, economic and socio-political aspects of environmental and resources management.

The master program starts in the winter term of each academic year. It consists of modules which are usually block-structured. The study course has a regular study period of four semesters and contains a work load of 120 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The fourth semester is devoted to the writing of the master’s thesis, normally in conjunction with a stay abroad. The two-year M.Sc. program consists of three semesters of course modules and project work and one semester of field research for the master thesis. Classes take place from Monday to Friday in the afternoon. We provide a comprehensive foundation in the geography of tropical and subtropical regions, economics, international development and management. According to your previous studies and personal interest you can choose one of the following focus areas: Water Management Urban and Regional Management Environmental and Land Use Management Renewable Energy Management Teaching is practice-oriented and is based on case studies, field visits and ongoing research at the ITT. Seminars and team projects enhance your project management, analytical and intercultural communication skills. Intensive tutoring supports you to develop your scientific abilities and individual research agenda. After graduation you will become part of the ITT Alumni community, an international network of experts on natural resources management with ample opportunities of continuing education.

In almost all economic sectors, in non-governmental organizations and associations, in national public institutions as well as in international state organizations, experts on natural resources management are more and more in demand. Such institutions often demand from future employees to have a wide knowledge in ecology and management – in addition to their specialized knowledge – and moreover with the ability to analyze, specify and evaluate complex systems. The graduates of the post-graduate programme TERMA fulfill such requirements. Due to our interdisciplinary, strongly practice-oriented education, our graduates have the ability to think global and develop, flexible and autonomously, adequate problem solutions. They are able to work in international teams and adapt on-the-job to different technical requirements thanks to their multicultural education. Our TERMA graduates are now working in: national governmental resp. public organizations and foundations, international governmental resp. public organizations, national and multinational private companies, national and international research and research promotion institutions, universities and institutions worldwide.
Cost:
