Program Overview

Program Description:
SSC-East China offers high school students two weeks of intensive language study in Beijing plus two weeks traveling through Nanjing, Suzhou, and Shanghai. Compared to the deeper dive with SSC-Beijing, the East China program gives students a sense of the larger Chinese picture and a chance to experience some of the tremendous cultural diversity China has to offer. We mirror the SSC-Beijing program exactly for the first two weeks living with a host family, attending daily Chinese classes, and launching out in the city for afternoon adventures. While traveling through East China, language classes take a back seat to cultural excursions as students spend their mornings and afternoons exploring tea culture in China's old capital of Nanjing, boating down the Yangze and inspecting silk factories in Suzhou, and touring the Oriental Pearl Tower and art scenes in Shanghai. The East China program gives students a chance to improve their Mandarin while seeing China on a grander scale.

Our classes are intense. Students take a placement test upon arrival, get sorted into an appropriate level, and take the equivalent of an academic semester of Chinese language study with daily real-world practice out in the community and at home with their host family.

China Institute's mission is to "advance a deeper understanding of China" and our Summer Study in China program does just that. More than a language class and more than a tourist circuit, China Institute's Summer Study in China program helps you to try on what it's like to be a local in China!
Setting Description:
At our partner school in Beijing located just west of the Temple of Heaven in inner-Beijing, students live in a neighborhood low on expats which means plenty of opportunity to "get out there" and try something new. Students also travel through Suzhou or "the Venice of China," Nanjing, China's old capital city, and Shanghai, the modern marvel.
