Program Overview

Program Description:
SSC-Beijing offers high school students four weeks of intensive language study in Beijing along with various cultural trips and workshops. Students spend all four weeks with a host family and really get a sense for what it's like to be a local Beijinger. Students attend daily Chinese classes (sizes usually range from 3-6 students) at our partner school just west of the Temple of Heaven. After our classes wrap up and we get lunch at the school cafeteria our group will launch out in the city for our afternoon adventure. Highlights include scavenger hunts through the Forbidden City, selfie challenges in Beijing's ancient hutong alleyways, and calligraphy workshops. We'll visit and explore art districts, temples, the Great Wall, and leave plenty of time for you to bond with your host family. This is a deep dive into Beijing life and culture in 2016. Come improve your Mandarin while experiencing life in China's cultural capital!

China Institute's mission is to "advance a deeper understanding of China" and our Summer Study in China program does just that. More than a language class and more than a tourist circuit, China Institute's Summer Study in China program helps you to try on what it's like to be a local Beijing-er!
Setting Description:
At our partner school located just west of the Temple of Heaven in inner-Beijing, students live in a neighborhood low on expats which means plenty of opportunity to "get out there" and try something new.
