Program Description:

"From Fire, Stone and Water: The Rise of Roman Civilization" - Discover underground Rome and the ruins of Pompeii during this exciting two week study abroad program and earn 3 semester credits in Geology, Geography, History or Anthropology. Many of the sites that students will visit are currently under excavation and not open to the general public. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!

The course is led by Dr. Giuseppina Kysar Mattietti, a faculty member in the Atmospheric Oceanic & Earth Science Department in collaboration with the Center for Speleoarchaeological Research - Sotterranei di Roma, a non-profit organization that is actively conducting research projects in hypogean environments of archeological interest in Rome and its surroundings. The goal for this interdisciplinary course is to develop an appreciation of how the interplay of the territory and culture brings life to Rome. Professor Kysar Mattieti uses geoarcheology as a gateway to support students' archeological, historical and anthropological studies of the city and her development. Starting this year the program will travel to in Naples for several days to explore the ruins of Pompeii, the ancient cities of Herculaneum and Oplontis as well as the Phlegrean fields and Piscina Mirabilis. After this program, you will earn 3 semester credits in ANTH 325, GEOL 315, GGS 398, HIST 398 or NCLC 399. Graduate credits may be possible, upon request. Setting Description:

Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but what you can see on the surface is not even half of her rich historical and cultural heritage. Underneath her street level, Rome unfolds more of the 28+ centuries of her past since the early settlements and her origin shrouded in myth. The city of Pompeii is famous for the ruins preserved under thick layers of dust and debris after Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Visitors to this ancient city and the surround areas can learn a great deal about the past and everyday life of Romans in the 1st century AD.

Cost:

$3,496. Program fee includes tuition, housing, daily breakfast, transportation to field sites and from Naples to Rome, field work excursions and equipment rental, farewell Roman dinners and 3 dinners in Naples.
