Program Overview

Program Description:
Travel to South Africa for 10-weeks to examine nutrition as it relates to maternal and newborn health. Work with local midwives to experience midwifery and labor support in a variety of settings, including assistance of home birth midwives in and around Cape Town, active observation in a midwife-lead obstetric unit within a government hospital for low income women living in Khayelitsha township, and service as labor support at Mowbray Maternity Hospital, a government hospital for middle and low income women. Through the on-site component, you'll build authentic, lasting relationships with the local community as you evolve your role of humble observation and service learning. You'll also participate in rigorous academic study via our cutting-edge online classroom technology for the duration of the course.

Survey complimentary and alternative approaches that practitioners use to identify nutritional deficiencies and overcome those deficiencies through a proper diet in accordance to the resources, means, special diets, personal preferences and cultural preferences of the client. 3. Engage in personal reflection and critical dialog about cultural humility and working with healthcare clients from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Coursework is lead by a team of instructors, including local professionals, Birth Institute faculty, and visiting facilitators, representing a diversity of backgrounds and experiences.

Setting Description:
South Africa is referred to as the Rainbow Nation, a title that captures the country's cultural and ethnic diversity. The municipality of Knysna, where the study abroad program is based, is located in the Western Cape province. The location is rural, however it is within 20 km of George Provincial Hospital and the George Medi Clinic. Knysna is surrounded by interesting and beautiful geography, including a large warm water estuary, stunning headlands, and rolling hills of temperate rainforest.
