Program Overview

Program Description:
Research degrees are awarded through the submission of a thesis and an oral examination. At a time when the possession of a BA honours degree has increasingly become simply a 'baseline' qualification for employment, the transferable skills element of this course makes it attractive to students wishing to demonstrate exceptional achievement. There is a higher degree of flexibility in the content of the programme than is usually the case with a taught MA, as the academic interests of its students will determine much of what is studied. The MRes provides students with an opportunity to undertake their first significant research project. It is a distinctive programme in both focus and delivery. Students will have an opportunity to study the subject at a higher level and in greater depth than is possible at undergraduate level and will receive training in academic research methods relevant to the discipline of English Literature. Current critical debates arising from cutting-edge research in the subject area will be studied and evaluated. Students will learn to formulate research proposals and will be given tutorial support in carrying the research through to a completed long dissertation of around 30,000 words. The programme also includes research using electronic on-line resources as well as traditional library-based resources; it covers the oral presentation of papers and critical discussion of seminar papers.
