Program Description:

Prato is a cousin of Florence and Pisa in the central Italy region of Tuscany. The Prato Summer Study Abroad program provides an opportunity to study the Middle Ages and Renaissance while experiencing the rich traditions of Italian life, such as living in a local residence in Prato and having access to stunning, historic buildings, and museums. The program includes a choice of classes; course sessions are held four days a week at the Monash University Centre in Prato. The program includes weekly excursions to local sites related to your studies, and weekends free for your own exploration.

As part of the coursework and the fun planned for the program, there will be four all-day excursions to various locations.

Setting Description:

Prato, also called Prato in Toscana, is a town in the Toscana region of north-central Italy. It lies along the Bisenzio River, 8 miles northwest of Florence. Prato, of uncertain origin, became a free commune in the 11th century and prospered as a centre of commerce and wool manufacture. Later drawn into the orbit of Florence, it declined in importance after its final subjection by that city in 1350. It was sacked by the Spanish army in 1512 during the campaign to restore the Medici family. The city is situated at the foot of Monte Retaia, the last peak in the Calvana mountain chain.

Cost:

The program fee for Summer 2014 has not been determined yet, but will include tuition, program fees, housing, welcome reception, and course excursions including local travel, entrance fees, and special event tickets. Not included: ASU fees, airfare, passport, books, additional meals, independent travel, and other personal expenses.
