Program Overview

Program Description:

The Master of Arts in American Studies (MAS) is a preeminent interdisciplinary program aimed at qualified graduate students from around the world. It offers inside knowledge with an outside perspective. MAS participants benefit from both excellent teaching by internationally renowned scholars and an interdisciplinary approach which meets the needs of future leaders. A selection of courses in subjects ranging from American literature to geography, history, law, musicology, political science, sociology, religious studies and American business culture are offered.

The MAS is an interdisciplinary 4-semster Master’s program starting each autumn. The program starts in early October with an orientation week. The first three semesters are devoted to coursework. Semester breaks are from mid-February to the end of March and from mid-July to the end of September, during which time students are expected to write and hand in term papers. The fourth semester is devoted to the writing of the Masters’ thesis.

Graduates of the MAS profit from their interdisciplinary and intercultural education and are well qualified to either continue on with a Ph.D. or work as experts on the United States in academic institutions, the civil service, the business world, the media, and non-profit organizations.

Applications will be accepted from February 1 to March 15 each year.
