Consistently ranked as the world's most livable city by The Economist, Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city has a population of almost 4.1 million people from as many as 153 different countries. As a result of the gold rush in the state of Victoria during the 1850's and 60's, Melbourne is the vibrant, cosmopolitan, culinary, financial, and multicultural center of Australia. Often referred to as Australia's culture and sporting capital, Melbourne was the first city in the southern hemisphere to play host to the Olympic Summer Games in 1956 and continues to play host to major international events each year. In more recent years it has been recognized as a UNESCO City of Literature and a major center for street art. Resting on the Yarra River's banks in Port Philip Bay, Melbourne is comprised of smaller neighborhoods, each with its own personality and attractions, and with an extensive public transportation system you can easily explore them all. Melbourne is known for its maze of gothic laneways that lie behind the city streets, where the venues for food, fashion and art are small, quirky and sometimes hidden. With a city that is brimming with things to do and see and a population that is known for being friendly and inclusive, Melbourne is a city that will instantly feel like home.

Students studying abroad in Melbourne have the opportunity to choose between two internationally renown institutions: The University of Melbourne and La Trobe University. Found in 1853, the University of Melbourne has a 150-year history of leadership in research, innovation, teaching and learning in a variety of fields ranging from the Arts to Sciences. University of Melbourne is recognized by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Australia. It is also affiliated with the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD-EQUIS). Choose from thousands of available subjects in Business, Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Law, Applied and Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Technology to name a few. Additionally, University of Melbourne's Victorian College of the Arts offers elite classes in performing arts, and its Asian Institute brings together expertise in politics, anthropology, economics, linguistics, history, religion and society across a number of Asian countries and the Middle East, including Islamic studies. Established in 1964, La Trobe University is one of Australia's fastest growing universities. Students at La Trobe can select from a wide range of subjects in which to study with the university's five faculties in Humanities, Social Sciences, Media, Communications, Business, Law, Science, Technology, Engineering, Health Sciences and Education. La Trobe has excellent research opportunities as well, due in part to the industry linkages that have been formed, and include over 30 University and faculty-based research centers and institutes. Media, Communications, and Journalism students also have the opportunity to complete an internship and there is an animal sanctuary on campus where students can volunteer.
