Setting Description:
Sala São Paulo is more than an ornate and technologically advanced home for one of São Paulo’s state orchestra; it’s also a symbol of rebirth and reinvention in São Paulo’s once-struggling centro, or downtown. With its adjustable ceiling and stunning acoustics, it’s hard to believe that this renowned symphony hall began life as a train station! But in fact, it opened as Estação Júlio Prestes, a grand early-20th-century terminal built to receive coffee shipments from the interior. As Brazil’s economy declined in the 1980s, so too did the station and its surrounding neighborhood. But a remarkably successful urban renewal effort has imbued the centro with newfound energy. Long-congested roads are now vibrant pedestrian shopping streets, and a once-crumbling train station hosts one of Latin America’s leading orchestras. Come to think of it, this odds-beating turnaround isn’t just a stand-in for the centro—it’s a pitch-perfect metaphor for Brazil itself!
