Program Description:

he concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) offers solutions to the water crisis in linking water to other vital resources and viewing the whole water cycle together with human interventions as the basis for sustainable water management. As it is a relatively new concept there is a high demand for experts adequately trained in the concept of IWRM. Next to the technical and managerial knowledge related to water resources these experts should also have knowledge of the practices of project funding and international cooperation. For bilateral projects between Germany and Arab countries there is a need for experts being familiar with the culture, language and politics of both sides and are skilled in intercultural communication. The MSc »IWRM« has the objective to form such experts and to promote the concept of IWRM in the context of German-Arab cooperation. WHAT DO WE OFFER? -courses and technical field visits on the latest concepts and technologies of water management -Living and learning in an Arab country and in Germany -Getting first hand advice from high level professionals and entrepreneurs in the Arab and German water sector -training on project management and leadership qualifications information on practice and projects of international cooperation scholarships

The studies cover a period of three semesters. The first semester takes place in Amman, second semester in Cologne. The third semester is dedicated to the master thesis. The programme consists of basic modules, like “IWRM Principles”, “Water Economics”, ”Water Governance”, “Management”, “Water System Management” with the aim of providing an overview on water management, economics, project management and the regional and institutional context. In addition the participants select 3 out of 8 specialized modules related to topics of water management emphasising the particular situation and experiences in the German or Arab region. The third semester will focus on the preparation of the master thesis. Internships and research stays predominantly in an Arab country if possible together with a local institution or company guarantee the practical orientation of the master research. Arab students should have the opportunity to realize their research in Germany if funding is secured. Tutors pay particular attention that the knowledge acquired in the first two semesters is applied in the individual projects. Field visits Field visits play an important role as the exposure to real projects and to relevant institutions is of highest importance in order to meet the objectives of the master programme Team project In the team projects students will have the chance to apply the new knowledge received in the basic or specialized modules to an interdisciplinary case study. Each team has at least 2 Arab and 2 German participants. The participants should come from diverse technical or managerial backgrounds. The team projects should be related to real projects visited during the field trips or to projects suggested through other partners of the network.

Setting Description:

The master program starts in the winter term of each academic year. It consists of modules, which are usually block-structured. The programme is equivalent to 90 ECTS Credit Points, (one CP equals around 30 hours of workload) according to the European system. As for the Jordanian system, this is equivalent to 36 credit hours. In the preparatory phase (starting midth of July) students will have the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge defined as prerequisite to the master program, acknowledging the fact that participants have a wide range of professional backgrounds. This basic knowledge is compiled in readers: 1.) »Water Governance« 2.) »Water Sciences and Technology« and 3.) »Principle of Economics«. which will be made available through the course website to each participant for self study. Cost:

Tuition Fees Nominal tuition fees are introduced since 2012 as the programme receives degressive funding from its donor institutions. In 2013, nominal tuition fees of 7.500.-€ for the entire course comprise all registration and excursion fess listed below, in addition to lectures, tutoring, supervision, training material and other programme activities. DAAD Scholarship holders are exempted from tuition fees. Applicants who are not awarded a DAAD scholarship may apply for a tuition fees waiver.
