Program Description:

1. GPSA for Health offers health care volunteer experiences for high school students in Guatemala and Belize, Central America. 2. With GPSA you WILL make a difference; for yourself and for the local communities. 3. GPSA programs vary from one to four weeks, and are whole year round. 4. With GPSA you will do hands on healthcare work in local communities that really need the help! 5. GPSA for Health is a 1 to 4 week medical career experience for high school students. You will: - Do hands on health care related work. - Educate children in the area of health care. - Receive training about healthcare and the local culture. - Receive language classes (Spanish, English or an indigenous language).

GPSA and the IB Diploma: Participating in the GPSA program is a great way to fulfill the service component of your CAS and if you return as an LIT, you can also write your extended essay on your experiences when you return. GPSA: Offers an immersion experience in the developing world, enjoying the benefits of the educational collaboration of Duke and Harvard Universities. GPSA and CAS: Creativity, Action, Service: Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. Through Service, students develop and apply personal and social skills in real-life situations involving decision-making, problem solving, initiative, responsibility, and accountability for their actions. GPSA: Every day on a GPSA program you’ll be serving the community. Our programs let you do hands on health care work in a village that desperately needs the help. Participating in a GPSA program helps you step out of your comfort zone. You will make decisions, solve problems and take initiative and responsibility in situations you will not encounter back home. GPSA LIT program and Extended Essay: The Extended Essay: Students engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying. The world studies extended essay option allows students to focus on a topic of global significance which they examine through the lens of at least two DP subjects. GPSA: Alumni of GPSA programs can apply to return as an LIT. Being an LIT is a great way to deepen your understanding of the developing world, its people, its culture and the many ways you can make a difference in people's lives. As an LIT, you'll design a long-term project under the supervision of Duke staff and students. Every month you'll join a conference call to develop your project ideas and your leadership abilities. Once on the ground, you'll execute your independent project with a team of first-year students. You‘ll also continue to meet with the staff daily to refine your leadership approach, your project and the work you are doing.
