Program Overview

Program Description:
The mode of instruction consists of class lectures, research papers and presentations etc. This course has been designed for students of any disciplines at senior undergraduate or graduate level with an interest in modern China particularly on social development issues. A general background in China or disciplines related are desirable, but no specific expertise is required. This course is taught by PENG Xizhe. He is currently a Professor of Population and Development at Fudan University and the director of State Innovative Institute for Public Management and Public Policy. Dr. Peng received his Msc. and Ph.D. degrees in Population Studies from London School of Economics and Political Sciences in 1983 and 1988 respectively. His research activities covered a wide range of population-related issues, including population dynamics and policy in China, social protection and social security, relationship between population and environment, gender studies etc. He served as advisor to various Chinese government agencies, and is a leading member of academic Associations of in the fields of population and development.

The course aims to provide students with a deeper understanding on China’s contemporary society, with particular focus on governance, public policy and social change in China. It introduces to China’s political and socioeconomic system, recent demographic and social transition, reforms in the field of public policies, contemporary China’s diplomacy and other related issues. As China’s rapid development is increasingly focusing worldwide attention on the People’s Republic, it is crucial to be able to grasp the social and political underpinnings of China’s unique trajectory and present-day situation. The course examines the current systems of social security and social development in China, and discusses the historical background, operational structure and future reforms of these systems. Topics include demographic transition, public health and medicare, family policy, gender equality, foreign policy, religious policy, minority issues, and so on.
