Program Description:

Travel to beautiful Bali, Indonesia to live and learn inside of a fully-functioning healthcare center in the heart of the capital city, Denpasar. Designed for anyone interested in natural birth and maternal healthcare, this 10-week course exposes students to models for midwife-lead maternal healthcare and provides foundations in gentle birth techniques. In a group of 2-4 students, participants will work closely with local care providers, and gain a first-hand perspective on the complexities of establishing gentle birth models of care within government-lead healthcare service delivery systems. Through the on-site component, students build authentic, lasting relationships with the local community as they evolve their role of humble observation and service learning. Students also participate in rigorous academic study via our cutting-edge online classroom technology for the duration of the course.

Become deeply integrated with the daily operations of a clinic serving low-resourced communities on the island of Bali. 2. Engage in personal reflection and critical dialog about cultural humility and working with clients from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. 3. Examine the spiritual and historical roots of midwifery across different world regions and cultures. 4. Analyze feminine power, cycles of life and death, wisdom and intuition throughout history 5. Consider how individual attitudes and beliefs about women and childbirth inform societal attitudes and beliefs about midwifery. Coursework is lead by a team of instructors, including local professionals, Birth Institute faculty, and visiting facilitators, representing a diversity of backgrounds and experiences.

Setting Description:

Bali is stunningly beautiful in terms of both physical geography and cultural vibrancy, with colorful dress, picturesque beaches, and magical emerald hills dotted with intricate architecture, sacred temples and remote rice paddies. Music, dance and flowered altars decorate every corner of this exquisite island. Yet while Bali may appear to be a near developed region of Indonesia, there is much work to be done on maternal health care.
