Program Overview

Program Description:

Depending on their German level, students will take „Advanced German 2” or “Teaching German as a Foreign Language” during the first half of the semester and “Academic Writing in German” during the second half. Language courses take place in the morning, Monday through Thursday. In addition, all GermanPLUS+ students will be enrolled in the following subject courses, which meet once a week in the afternoon: "Theatermetropole Berlin", "Deutschland und seine Kunst", "Deutsche Identität(en), Geschichte, Politik."

GermanPLUS+ is a package consisting of two German language and three subject courses, all taught in German and designed to meet the needs and interests of students with advanced German language abilities. Upon successful completion, participants are awarded 20 ECTS credits from Freie Universität Berlin. The program also includes accommodation, cultural activities, excursions in Berlin and Europe, and a range of other services.

GermanPLUS+ participants will gain knowledge and skills that will enrich and add to their studies back home (be they German Studies or Germany-specific studies within other disciplines), sustain their competencies and self-confidence for studying abroad in a German-speaking environment, and provide them with a competitive edge in pursuing a German Studies or Germany-related academic career. Small classes, expert faculty, and the availability of day-to-day guidance and support are designed to enable students to make the most of this unique educational opportunity.

Setting Description:

Berlin is a major European metropolis with unrivaled cultural offerings and a rich and turbulent history. FU-BEST is located in the southwest of Berlin, with easy access to the city center. You will have the option of living with a host-family or in a single-occupancy, fully furnished studio apartment. German PLUS+ is offered in the Fall (Aug. - Dec.) and the Spring (Feb. - May) semester.

Cost:

7,700 Euros (please check our website for most up-to-date information), including: application fee, tuition, course materials, semester pass for public transportation, Welcome Reception and Farewell Dinner, Orientation Days activities, a number of cultural field trips during the semester, one week-long off-site excursion, several concert/opera/soccer visits, museum pass, liability and accident insurance.
