This course is taught at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome campus (Rome, Italy) and LUISS Business School (Rome, Italy) as part of the China Europe International Summer School (CEISS). This is a special track that combines two courses: “The Making of Europe-Rise of Civilization” and “Management “Made in Italy”-Understanding the Italian Way”. This four-week course, taught entirely in glorious Rome, will provide you with a thorough introduction to the history, culture and society of Italy, from the beginnings of the Glorious Roman Empire until its present business culture. During the first two weeks, taught in collaboration with Universita Cattolica, you will make a voyage from Antiquity to the later Middle Ages, highlighting its politics, religious affairs and societal developments. Once the capital of the glorious Roman Empire; then rival to the Florentine Renaissance; birthplace of the Baroque and location of the Vatican, beautiful Rome is in various ways the ancestor of modern Europe. We will be studying Rome´s and Europe´s history from inside and outside the classroom, since many of its iconic places exist still nowadays. We will visit the tangible remains of the Roman era and discover the beautiful (early) churches which were transformed in later times by geniuses like Michelangelo or Bernini and unravel the politics behind it. During the latter two weeks, offered in collaboration with LUISS Business School, you will step into the present time and you will study contemporary Italy, in particular its business and management culture. Conventional wisdom holds that management models, techniques, and tools are universal. Nevertheless, cultural, geographical, historical and industrial specificities that embed organizations and professionals are tremendous sources of "bias" on the otherwise universal managerial models. Indeed, specific management practices can be used to explain why and how some industries and organizations are more successful than others. "Made in Italy" is a label that includes the agri-food, fashion, design and mechanical industries wherein Italian organizations have managed to develop and maintain a competitive lead worldwide. This course exposes students to theories as well as practices and experiences of Made in Italy through interactive lectures, case discussion sessions, guest speakers, and company’s visits to better understand innovation and marketing practices developed and deployed by “Made in Italy” organizations. The business course focuses on four major topics: 1. Cultural Dimensions of Doing Business in Italy and in the EU 2. Marketing of Made In Italy 3. Business models innovations in Italian apparel industry 4. Made in Italy and Chinese market: protection of Intellectual Property
