Program Description:

The program aims to provide an intensive and diverse study abroad experience to its participants. It does so by combining three essential elements: While German language instruction takes place on two to four days per week in the morning, a varied menu of subject classes are held in the afternoon. Using the city with its rich cultural, political, and historical offerings as a resource, all courses integrate local field-trips into their curriculum, thus extending the classroom beyond the program site in order to fully profit from the unique location of this fascinating metropolis.

FU-BEST is a semester program for incoming students based on the American calendar. FU-BEST features a combination of university-standard German language instruction on all levels and a large menu of subject courses (primarily in the humanities and social sciences) taught in English. All courses make practical use of Berlin as a resource and have a strong focus on Berlin, Germany, and Europe in their respective subjects. Over 300 students each academic year profit from this intensive, enriching academic and intercultural learning experience.

The program links high-quality academic instruction with a broader international experience, encompassing elements of culture, society, history, and politics, in Berlin, in Germany, and in (Central) Europe generally. Small classes, expert faculty, and the availability of day-to-day guidance and support are designed to enable students to make the most of this unique educational opportunity. FU-BEST participants will gain knowledge and skills that will enrich and add to their studies back home.

Setting Description:

Berlin is a major European metropolis with unrivaled cultural offerings and a rich and turbulent history. FU-BEST is located in the southwest of Berlin, with easy access to the city center. You will have the option of living with a host-family or in a single-occupancy, fully furnished studio apartment. The FU-BEST program is offered in the Fall (Aug. - Dec.) and the Spring (Feb. - May) semester.

Cost:

8,380 Euros (please check our website for most up-to-date information), including: application fee, tuition, course materials, semester pass for public transportation, Welcome Reception and Farewell Dinner, Orientation Days activities, a number of cultural field trips during the semester, one week-long off-site excursion, several concert/opera/soccer visits, museum pass, German insurance package.
