Program Overview

Program Description:
Since 1971, the FSU London Program has offered students from across the nation a fine liberal arts curriculum in an historic seat of Western government, commerce, and literature. The London Study Centre is located in a row of 17th century buildings registered on the British National Heritage list. Students live and study in our state-of-the art educational facility in the heart of the Bloomsbury district, one block from the British Museum and minutes from the theatre district, the National Gallery and many more London landmarks. The Oxford Law Program is the oldest summer program at Oxford offered by an American law school. Students have a unique opportunity to study comparative law and the history and development of English common law and common law institutions in their native setting. There are many programs based at our London Study Centre, ranging from our broad curriculum programs that are attractive to students in any major to curriculum-focused programs in areas like literature, international affairs, communication, media, art, theatre, psychology, global sports management, choral and instrumental music education, and European and British History.

Consider what it would be like to be in England, not as a tourist or a visitor, but as a resident – someone who through everyday interactions becomes immersed in the beauty, history and culture that is London! For 40 years, The Florida State University has offered a small liberal arts college atmosphere in the heart of London. Small classes, dedicated teacher-scholars, and engaged peer groups make studying in London an enormously rewarding experience. With courses designed to maximize the use of the city as both a classroom and a text, and professors committed to imaginative approaches to teaching, students spend a great deal of their time learning through experience by visiting London’s museums, galleries, theatres, and neighborhoods. Located in historic Bloomsbury, the London Study Centre is a stone’s throw from the West End Theatre District and the British Museum, and is within easy walking distance of places of interest which include Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace. The possibilities of a term in London are many and varied. Thousands of Florida State students have already experienced this unique opportunity to live and study as a resident of this vibrant city. Participation in this program allows students to experience various supervised group excursions, often traveling to places that would be difficult to reach by themselves. Fall and Spring semesters include a Monday through Thursday class schedule, allowing plenty of opportunities for personal travel, several long weekends, plus a ten-day break. The calendar generally includes day trips to places such as Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford, Wales, Brighton, and Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as fall and spring semester overnight trips to Paris and an exciting UK destination, such as Cornwall, Edinburgh, or Liverpool. Students also participate in a variety of cultural activities, including a regular Tea, guest lectures, pot-luck suppers and guided walks through and around London.
