Program Overview

Program Description:
The postgraduate programme in Ecological Impact Assessment has developed from high quality ecological provision in our existing undergraduate Biology awards. It takes advantage of staff professional expertise in impact assessment as well as their research and teaching experience. The course addresses skill gaps identified by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and the British Ecological Society, in terms of: biological survey; data interpretation; environmental legislation; and, professional practice. The development of this course has been encouraged and welcomed by industry. EcIA is a dynamic and developing area of ecology, which brings together theory and practice to address contemporary conservation issues, therefore the EcIA Programme is vocationally oriented. In addition to academic input, professionals from industry also make key contributions. A Steering Group comprising ecologists from consultancy, local government, the voluntary sector and government agencies, ensures industry relevance and credibility. The course structure is designed to maximise flexibility. Delivery is part-time, with teaching concentrated into short blocks. Between contact times, your studies are supported by the University's virtual learning environment, Minerva. Several awards are available within the EcIA programme to match your personal study or development needs allowing you to register for the full MSc, the PG Diploma or either of the PG Certificates. The part-time MSc programme runs over two and a half calendar years from September.
