Program Overview

Program Description:
Duke Summer in Berlin, a 6 week- 2 course credit program, is interdisciplinary in nature and attractive to students with a substantial interest in German politics and culture. Students choose from three tracks: English only; German only; or one course in German and one in English (the most popular option). Students with no prior German are welcome—either as beginners in German language or within the English only track.

Courses will be offered in Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced German. In addition, upper-level content courses taught in English fulfill German Studies, Jewish Studies, History, International Comparative Studies, Literature, Theater, Art History and other departments’ requirements.

Setting Description:
The principal attraction is Berlin itself, the capital of Germany and the economic capital of Europe. Students will be housed in shared apartments with full kitchens (2 or three students per two-bedroom apartment) in Kreuzberg, a culturally vibrant section of Berlin.
