Program Overview

Program Description:
Duke’s intensive language institute for elementary and intermediate level Spanish students is newly relocated to Alicante, Spain. Alicante’s rich culture is attributable to the importance of its port throughout history. The picturesque Mediterranean architecture is complemented by Roman and Arabic influences. Today it is the eighth largest city in Spain and a popular area for tourism.

Students participate in an intensive immersion program that combines two semesters of language study into a six week program. Duke faculty members and professors from the University of Alicante teach the four hours of daily instruction. Spanish 104, the intensive elementary course, is a combination of Duke’s Spanish 101 and 102. Spanish 240, the intensive intermediate course, is a combination of Duke’s Spanish 203 and 204. Afternoon workshops highlight Spanish culture and history and help students get to know the city. Students receive two course credits for the six week program.

Setting Description:
The program will study on the campus of the University of Alicante on the beautiful Mediterranean coast. In addition to cultural workshops, students will enjoy spending time on the beaches of the Costa Blanca, and traveling on two weekend trips; possible locations for these trips include Madrid/Toledo and Granada. This immersion experience will enrich the student’s linguistic and cultural knowledge while providing opportunities to improve spoken Spanish skills.
