Program Overview

Program Description:
Our program begins in late June with the orientation session on Choate's Wallingford campus. The group flies to Spain, with an ultimate destination of La Coruña located on the Atlantic coast. The program includes a 6-day excursion to some of Spain's most cherished landmarks.

The academic portion of the day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon during the week and consists of three classes. Classes are conducted in Spanish, and all students have at least two native Spanish instructors. After classes, students share lunch with their hosts, and afternoons offer ample time for leisure activities and time to prepare the next day's assignments.

Setting Description:
Students in the program are placed with host families. Life in a Spanish home can be very rewarding. Our host families come in many varieties: some with young children, some with older children; some two-parent, some single-parent; some older families, some younger. The home-stay is an opportunity for students to live in a Spanish home and to develop a relationship with real people. Complete immersion in Spanish language and culture is a reality as students share all meals with and become a part of the family. La Coruña has superb beaches with clean, clear water and fine, white sand, as well as tempting shops for the souvenir hunter. Teachers accompany students weekly to a local cultural interest, such as a newspaper plant, an archaeological museum, a planetarium, or a nearby relic of ancient Roman architecture.
