Program Overview

Program Description:

For more than 25 years, Broadreach has worked with middle, high school and college students to help them discover their passions and spark new curiosities on summer adventure programs. Students explore the world and their own abilities with the appropriate level of challenge and support in small-group settings, learning from both professional instructors and fellow students. Broadreach students have earned thousands of hands-on scuba diving and sailing certifications, as well as college credits in subjects ranging from marine biology and medicine to Spanish and photography.

Middle school adventures: Discovery-oriented global adventures that introduce middle school students to the joys and rewards of experiencing new countries, cultures and activities. All programs are intentionally designed for younger teens, providing an appropriate level of challenge and support in small-group settings. Broadreach instructors are available to travel with students to and from program locations, and to guide them through every step of their journeys.

High school dive and sail adventures: Extraordinary, off-the-beaten path global adventures that challenge students to build and use new skills and perspectives. High schoolers will gain leadership skills, experience the responsibilities of various team roles and have the opportunity to earn certifications for scuba diving and sailing – all while experiencing the magic of the underwater world and life at sea.

High school study abroad adventures: Rare opportunities for students to become immersed in incredible global environments and actively explore topics through hands-on experiences. All Broadreach study abroad programs offer college credit through Lesley University in subjects including natural science, health science, Spanish and photography. Students may enroll at Lesley University to receive credits that easily transfer to most U.S. universities and colleges. Or, students can simply join programs for once-in-a-lifetime adventures and to have more fun learning than they ever thought possible.

Setting Description:
While it’s still being debated to this day, San Salvador is believed by many to be the site where Columbus first discovered the New World. 520 years later, a multitude of discoveries are still taking place on this secluded stretch of paradise in the eastern Bahamas. Only this time they’re mostly happening underwater, where the role of Columbus will be played by you, a marine-biologist-in-training. Base camp is at the Gerace Research Centre, located on the north shore of the 63 square-mile island. A former submarine tracking base, this field station is crawling distance to rich snorkel and dive sites crawling with large schools of research subjects. On San Salvador, marine biology is best studied experientially, on the reefs, in the sea grass beds and mangrove channels and on miles and miles of endless beaches, which is exactly how you do it. Go beyond the classroom and venture to the Dixon Hill lighthouse, meet the locals in Cockburn town and mingle with iguanas at Green Cay.
