Program Overview

Program Description:

Among German universities, Bard College Berlin is unique by virtue of its small size, intimate atmosphere, coherent and imaginative curriculum, and decidedly international composition (the student body includes citizens of more than 42 countries). Students work with faculty from different backgrounds on questions of ethics, politics, epistemology, religion, and aesthetics, with the understanding that such questions are naturally and deeply connected. English is the language of communication and instruction at Bard College Berlin.

The "Bard in Berlin" study abroad program offers participants rigorous coursework in fields such as literature, political theory, philosophy, and art history, taking advantage of Bard College Berlin's location in one of the world's most artistically vibrant and historically layered cities. Students are encouraged to intern with a non-governmental organization, arts institution, or other organization, and to study German. The language of instruction is English, and students select from core courses and electives in disciplines that complement their own educational pursuits, in addition to the required Berlin course "Berlin: Experiment in Modernity".

Setting Description:
Bard College Berlin's residential campus is located in the Pankow neighborhood of the former East Berlin. The buildings comprise 8 renovated former embassies to the GDR, each with a wonderful garden. The buildings, designed in the neo-Bauhaus style by Eckart Schmidt now function as comfortable dorms, spacious teaching offices, a library, studios and performance space, and administration buildings. Berlin’s cosmopolitan atmosphere, cultural and intellectual riches all play a part in Bard College Berlin's education. In the Bard in Berlin program, students and faculty come together to explore Berlin’s cultural heritage and continuing development. Evenings out for events in the city often end with conversations together in a café.
